700 N Series Blam Strap Hinge

Our 700 series is the least expensive formed strap hinge that we produce. We use a heavy press to form the hinge from a 3/16″ thick flat steel bar – “BLAM”.

The edges are smoothed, the hinge barrel, holes, and offset are then applied. The finished piece has the general shape of early strap hinges, but lacks the forge texture and three-dimensionality that we work into our more expensive hand forged hinges.

N Series indicates a narrower hinge.

701 N Series Forged Bevel Strap Hinge

Our 701 hinges are representative of the best early work. We hammer out a hinge blank. Hammering the blank results in subtle curved lines rather than the harsh straight lines of a machine cut hinge.

It also allows us to hammer a heart, bean or round termination on the hinge. We then hand forge beveled edges along the length of the hinge. The bevel spreads the width slightly and accentuates the un-straightness of the hinge. This results in a very nice forged texture along the length of the hinge. I asked an older gentleman from South Carolina , a very knowledgeable and experienced restoration specialist, “why the bevel on the early hinges?”. His answer…”same reason as they hand-beaded the edges of hewn beams. It creates shadow lines. The shadow lines give three dimensionality and pulls your eye to the added care and detail of the original craftsman”.

702 N Series Tapered and Beaned Strap Hinge

Our 702 hinge is a 701 before the bevel is applied. We hammer out the blanks by hand. The result is the same subtle arc along the hinge edge which creates a very nice profile.

There is three dimensionality to the end of the hinge and the last eight or ten inches carries the forged texture imparted by the fire. Since we’re forging these pieces by hand, we can apply a heart or exaggerated lima-bean shape to the end of the hinge as an optional detail.

705 N Series Storm Strap Hinges

The 705 “Storm Strap” is an inexpensive but functional and durable shutter hinge. It’s just a straight, flat steel bar.

Rolled, punched and offset to function as a strap hinge; the storm strap is a more durable and functional solution than a light-weight cut-out hinge in the same price range. As it turns out, my “storm hinge” wasn’t a new idea after all. Traveling through Europe , you’ll find countless examples in Germany and even more in France and Italy . So the hinge is actually European in origin – which comes as no surprise – and it’s very comfortable on homes of continental design. The hinge lends itself to additional detailing from which a rather elegant application often results.

706 N Series Beveled Strap Hinge

This is just a storm strap with a hammered bevel. Quite a few people have asked for this hinge and it is a very handsome and historically correct variant on our simple storm hinge.

708 N Series Westport Strap Hinge

Based on custom hardware designed and made for a Connecticut residence with 125 windows with functional shutters. It’s a storm strap hinge with an interesting termination, kind of contemporary, kind of European, definitely NOT Colonial. It works well on properties of many periods and styles.

405 Series Parliament Hinge

These plate steel hinges were common from around the civil war to well into the 20th century. They’re a mortise type hinge that mounts perpendicular to the building and onto the side of the shutter. The shutters close into the window opening.

Our light hinges are made of 14 gauge steel (.075″), are three inches high, and cover 3/4 ” of the thickness of the shutter. Our heavy parliament hinges are made of 1/8″ thick steel plate. They are 4″ high, come with #12 flat head screws, and are 1″ wide where they meet the shutter.
